I think that using that girl as an example is void..

Since you cant say that people didn't kill themselfs before the internet and it had something to do with a social/relationship thingy..

Just cause this one was linked 2 a social network, its special, which its not.

People killed themselfs cause of social and relationship shit like that way before facebook myspace or the internet..

social networks will always be, and they are everywhere...a forum is a kind of social network, where people participate in social interactions debates ect.
Same is youtube ect..
ect is awesome

i love using ect..ect.. ;P

Facebook, for two reasons:
1) Connecting with/Contacting people who otherwise would have been difficult to contact; ie, Primary school friends and whatnot.

2) I find the messaging easy, albeit simple. MSN always slowed my computer down, and the good chatting programs such as Skype don't have all of my friends.

I don't have any qualms with social networking in sé, but I seriously dislike the way most of those networks behave themselves. Facebook and consorts are far from sociable. They don't care about privacy, only about aquiring more and more members.

I had an account there, for a very short while. Although Facebook assure you that you can close your account, such is not the case. The account stays in existence, only inactive. They never close it down in case you might re-consider and pick up where you left.

Besides, social networks are far too crowdy to my taste. Being kind of a loner by nature myself, I don't like it too much when every tit in the neigborhood wants to be my pal or wants to send me gifts, greetings or wants me to take a test about my knowledge on the mating behaviour of Wyle E. Coyote...

Having recently reseen WALL-E, maybe that's our destiny. Fat slobs on hovering chaises-longue (that's lounge-chairs for some of you) chattering away through wifi-zized long range cyberboxes to equally fat slobs right next to you... nice.

well Tazzzzzz after reading the link and then reading the comments where stupid arses were replying and getting everything muddled I can only say that IH is my social network as here such insanity is ripped out before it ever gets so bloated.
Myself it seems that places as twitter and face book gave the keys to the zoo to the monkeys and its out of control.
These places are supposed to be social? well if thats true I must be from another planet.

It depends what you use them for, twitter is just stupid - end of story, facebook I use it as a joke, I only got 39 friends and I have hidden half of them cos they annoy me, its not my real name, in fact I change my name all the time to the annoyance of everyone else. Me and missus hang shit on each other and I hang shit on every one else. Most of us mods use it just to whinge and hang shit on each other.

Yeah right. We've all seen pictures of these "mentally stable" students lighting their farts on fire and binge drinking while spinning in a heavily-stained La-Z-Boy.
These online social networks are unnecessary. There's a reason why I don't keep in touch with the captain of my old high school's football team...because he was a douchebag back then and he probably still is a douchebag.
There's absolutely no point in feigning interest in people you didn't care about before. If you want a "friend", go out and meet people face-to-face.

Didn't want to make a new topic, so I guess I'll post this here.

I thought that this was an interesting read;

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/13/technology/13search.html?_r=3&src=busln

Sure it's NYT, but it proposed something I've been thinking about for some time; and not just for the reasons mentioned there. Nowadays, if you google something, you're just as likely to get results from a social network as from somewhere else. In a sense, social networking is taking over search engines, is the premise of that story.
