Hello Guys,

I posted a topc a couple of months back because for an unknown reason, my Utorrent was not downloading my torrents as fast as they were. I was going from a torent of about 600-900mb taking an hour and half to the 2 or 3 days.

After much investigating and help from people here in the fourum with Speedtests we came to the conclution that it would be best for me to get a router because then i would not have to keep resetting the port..

I got a router a few weeks ago but my downloads are still remaining the same. Unless i go into the speed and reset the port number to 0 each time then the download stays at 1 or 2 or even 3 days!

Im getting very fed up of having to keep my eye on it to make sure this doesnt happen. Any ideas on what i can do?

i thought you told them you were in a place that had shared internet and they told you you needed to get your own service.

sorry not sure who told you that but the only reason for having a router is if you have more than one pc or just an added layer of protection.

you having one on a shared network will do nothing for your speed.so long as the primary router is not in your control there is nothing you can do about your speed.

somewhere early on in that rambling thread you were told you needed to get your own internet service and that still stands.wherever you are is getting only so much bandwidth from some provider and you are sharing it with however many people that live there, you will never have a reliable constant speed that way.

I have my mobile phone on the same network, thats why I got the router so i could connect my phone to it.

I am slightly confussed though. The problem has nothing to do witht he speed as that was covered in that thread. If it was to do with speed then downloads would not correct the ETA to a normal, exspected time every time i correct the port number.
Also I never had a problem before a few months ago and iv been downloading for about a year or so. If the speed was the problem,it would of effected me alot sooner.

Im very confussed :/

ah i see a phone is why.still until you have your own service this is basically playing pin the tail on the donkey.there is no reason to have to change your ports it isn't recommended unless you have something else set up wrong maybe,i never change mine.i don't see how having your own router would have anything to do with stopping you from needing to change ports as the trouble is still with the original service and router.

the change from a few months ago could be simply a new tenant using bandwidth or ones already there using more.

If you still have the packaging for the router see if you can get a refund ....... have you tried right clicking on a torrent and giving it "high bandwidth" ? Probably won't make a lot of difference but everything else has been tried !

How am i to go about own services then? Would that be me getting internet with bt or someone like that?

Robmead unfortunatly my boyfriend gave me the router (he had a spare one) so no take back for me Sad

I didnt even know i could choose that option,iv just right clicked and selected high. Guess see what happens!

BT must have the worst reputation in these forums for slow upload/download speeds ! If you can get Virgin fibre optic broadband I'd recommend that. Has the router got any juicy details, her bank details maybe ?! Wink

God really? I would of thought because they have been around for as long as i can remember, they would be ya know,"up to date" with what people want.

Haha no,no bank details. But she set the username to her name and my boyfriends name. so i have to look at that every time i connect to my wifi via my phone...i just dont look any more Wink

Awwww ! With BT i had upload speeds of 40kbps and download speeds of 2mbps, I was paying for "up to" 20mbps download speeds. With Virgin I pay for 50mbps download speeds and that's what I get, sometimes more.
BT are bringing in "Infinity" which is their fibre optic broadband service, don't know how fast that will be.

What are the instalation fees like? To be honest whats always put me off is having tp pay a ridicoulous price for it all being set up.
Also,do you have to have a landline?

No landline needed for Virgin and installation is currently free. If you know somebody who already has Virgin get them to recommend you and they get £50 discount off their bill, split the money !

edit: If you apply online you get the £50 discount.
