What I do is install the CCCP codec pack
without
their player. This way the default Windows Media Player that comes with Windows takes over. It has a better interface and works better for me than the classic version. Since it's gotten it's new upgrades there really has been no reason to prefer Classic over this one.
Time was when 9 had problems with codecs and so we recommended classic. This is no longer true. So unless you prefer the interface of the old one, you really don't need to install it.
Do not recommend the Klite pack...it has not been under development for a long while now...it's codecs are out of date.
Oh and having a copy of VLC around doesn't hurt.
Edit: oh that Neph's too quick...! |

we still recommend classic because WMP has no options to speak of.it has no multiple audio or subtitle options that many need for various reasons and will only play the first one which if you are getting early bluray that may well be russian or chinese.
a quick example would be the 1080p copy of 9 i got some time ago that has chinese simplified subs as default but are not hardcoded yet will display in WMP no matter what lyric, caption, option is ticked but a simple no subs click and it doesn't display in MPC.
another that i can remember this early in the morning is i have a copy of jumper that has dual audio english and spanish but if i only knew spanish it would be a wasted download because the english is default and WMP doesn't have a multiple audio option that i could find and MPC does.my trilogy resident evil copy has russian as default so wouldn't be able to be played in WMP but is great in MPC.
now yes i could use mkvmerge to fix any of these problems in a couple minutes or les but then the file would be no good to seed unless i wanted to keep both versions for an indefinite amount of time.
MPC gets updates pretty frequently so don't let the Classic name fool you.
MPC i just right click, click navigate and choose any language or sub i wish.right click again and choose pan & scan and click scale to 16:9 tv or if an older flick i right click and then video frame, override aspect ratio and click either 185:100 or 235:100.and i couldn't find any way to take thumbnail screens or screenshots at all in WMP both of which i can do with MPC.
there are a plethora of options available that WMP is lacking and pretty much still makes it worthless.i don't always even bother to set it up on new installs because i don't use it. |

I guess I've gotten too used to it, is all.
I checked what you said about the captions not switching off and you're right, they don't!
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with classic, just I preferred the interface of the newer one. And I use vlc for just about everything else...it's so feature rich.
I should give classic a full try out sometime.... |

hmmm now im confused
i do have classic and wmp. i was tending to use classic, probably cause of the name. i know one of them i struggled to get the srt file to play. vlc played it with a couple of clicks. i do have a copy of vlc WV just for ease of use. its pretty good that way just not a great pic. codec pack seems to be working great. i do like the aspect override on mpc and your right with the snapshot point neph, i couldnt find it either i guess it may come down to personal preference and just trial and error. at least we have the choice |

just ignore what viper (sorry WV ) posted and stick with MPC it will play any srt or other sub and so long as the name is the same it will start with the movie.if not just drag it in after the movie is started and it will load automatically and start playing so long as subs are enabled,or it will just load in and not play.
if i remember you were having a problem because you hadn't unrar'd/unzipped the sub and was trying to play that, instead of unzipping and dragging the sub into the movies folder, but could be misremembering..
it has much the same options as VLC but with better playback, you should have both though.i just don't like VLC because it gets into everything and can cause problems like nero.i pretty much don't use it though because while the video playback has gotten better it still doesn't do as good as MPC with my set up. |

no it was that everytime i tried to dl the srt it would open with vlc. uninstalled and it dl fine then. problem i got now is when i try to crop or reduce screen res or screen size using vdub i keep getting an error message saying `CANNOT START VIDEO COMPRESSION
AN UNKNOWN ERROR OCCURD (MAYBE ORRUPT DATA).
(ERROR CODE -100). this never used to happen and iv googled and tried all solutions. needed to be able to do it as certain films wont fit or are to high res to fit on 22lcdtv. i had done it with ease lots of times. i have tried 4 different films and still get the same message. i cant find a copy of mousetrap to work on said tv so am trying to reduce res and size but it wont happen? joining files worked so i dont think its an decompress or re compress issue. |

no not yet. heard of gom but im not having issues with the player anymore. i think messing around with the codec packs has now started a prob with virtualdub-throwing the error code up when converting. never rains but it pours. i dl 3 films today. escape to witch mountain, mousehunt and baby's day out. all xvid dvd rips. none play on 22". media info says they are all dx50 codec. iv changed them all to xvid using fourcc. still no joy. tv also says screen res not supported which is why im trying to reduce res. vdub used to do it great but now i get the error message i posted earlier. iv even dl about 5 different versions of all 3 films and none work!!!!!! i think im a little ocd when it comes to these things although they are all great films my little girl would love.
her tv says unsupported file or format and unsupported screen res. if i cant sort it looks like all i can do is buy the films and rip them. hate being defeated lol
lmao LG! nice one |

ok so i googled vdub codecs, seems vdub is pretty picky about which codecs you have in order for it to run, this is why i dl all the different packs in the first place. the search pointed me to "xvid codec" not a pack or with any bells and whistles on, simply xvid codec. dl that, installed and i am now able to convert from 4.3 to 16.9, crop and reduce res which is where i was originally.no error -100. i have not tried it on the 22" yet which is avi/xvid. im guessing it wont work as it didnt when i originally started dl films for that tv using xvid codec. bizarre i know as i compressed with an xvid codec and its an xvid tv! this is why i dl so many codecs originally and ffdshow was the only compressor that worked on that tv, yet the ffdshow that comes with cccp that i dl today throws up error -100. i used to use the standalone ffdshow codec and it worked fine. fingers crossed this single xvid codec will work. only just seen your post taz. read up on revo and it looks a great app. will defo get it. is cccleaner the same as tune up utilities as i already have that? if not i will get cc and do what you said |
