Well, I know I already posted a pic of Lara BoomBoom Croft, but I gave the question posed in the o.p. some serious tought. As most might know, I've been a games addict for over 30 years so I looked back and tried to figure out what the single game was that pushed games and the gaming industry into overdrive with a quantum leap.
I have to say that it would have to be Ultima Underworld. Now, I doubt many, if any here ever played it, but it was the very very first fluent 3D virtual world from a first perspective.
The second they released that game, computer games evolved from 2d flat screens (as in the old platform-style games) to a simulation of reality.
Most people think it's Doom that was the very first, but it was Ultima Underworld.
Seeing as it was released in 1992, it beat out Doom by a year. Not only that, but it allowed you to have your character jump and swim... Something not introduced again into gaming till Doom 2 and 3 even.
Besides that, it was a role playing game pur sang... the games I like the most
Anyway... that's it... my 2 devaluated euro cents |

I would go with Zelda, mechanics from that series are still even now cropping up in current gen games like Darksiders and Castlevania.
The Fallout series is pretty awesome, But I havent really seen it influence many other games, dunno if you could call Baldurs Gate influenced by Fallout.... pity I can only vote once
I'm not a huge shooter fan (just finished and thoroughly enjoyed CoD BO), I think they are all pretty derivitive of Wolfenstein 3D, I never really enjoyed GTA series, the only one I completed wasnt even part of that series, but has the same dev (Red Dead Redemption). |

As the question was related to past tense in what great game and influence in general I can only say that the master chiefs and any other alien blasting hero has to move over. There is only one true great mother out there and it was the DUKE.
"Duke Nukem Forever"' I played more hours than any other game on the planet and even though the mechanics the graphics and the game play are simple by todays standards i still think he kicked arse better and further than any other game hero to date. But then I was playing Duke when some were still sucking mama's teats.
next year he's back, I only hope they don't mess it up. |

I loved Duke Nukem, I played it on PS1, N64 and PC, it kinda lost its way when it went into Third Person Shooter I think.
The new version is made by the people that made Borderlands a top class shooter, they do humour and shooting VERY well, I think its in safe hands mate |
